Introduction – Online Fraud Cases Rising in India
With the rise of digital payments, UPI, net banking, trading apps, and social media usage, online fraud cases have increased across India. Many victims lose money within seconds and do not know what to do next.
The good news is: money can be recovered if you take immediate action and follow the proper legal steps.
This blog explains step-by-step how to recover money from online fraud in a clear and practical way.
Step 1 – Call the National Cyber Helpline 1930 Immediately
Immediately call 1930 after you realize the fraud.
This connects directly to the Cyber Financial Tracking System, which can quickly freeze the scammer’s account if the money is still there.
Why timing is important:
If you report within the first 1–2 hours, banks can block the transaction before the scammer withdraws it.
Your chances of recovery reduce if you delay the complaint.
Step 2 – File a Complaint on the National Cyber Crime Portal

Upload:

Step 3 – Inform Your Bank Immediately

Cyber police can:
-
Track the scammer’s bank accounts
-

Step 5 – Check the Status of Frozen Funds
Cyber police will send a freeze request to the scammer’s bank.
They will confirm:
-
If money is still available
-
If partial funds are frozen
-
If the scammer already withdrew the amount
If funds are available, recovery becomes possible.
Step 6 – When a Court Order Is Required
A court order may be needed if:
-
The bank refuses refund without legal direction
-
Large amount is involved
-
Funds are in multiple accounts
-
Cyber Cell suggests judicial intervention
Process:
-
File an application with all supporting documents
-
Submit FIR (if registered), UTR, screenshots, and complaint proof
-
Court reviews evidence
-
Court issues an order to refund or release funds
-
Submit the order to the bank
-
Bank credits the funds back to your account
Step 7 – How to Remove Lien or Unfreeze Your Account
Sometimes the victim’s account gets frozen due to:
-
Receiving money from fraud-related activity
-
P2P/crypto transactions
-
Wrong-credit scams
To remove freeze/lien:
-
Submit written application to Cyber Cell
