How to Stay Safe from UPI Payment Scams
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) has made digital transactions in India faster and more convenient. But with its popularity, UPI payment scams have also increased. Cybercriminals use phishing, fake payment messages, and social engineering to trick people into losing money.
Here’s how you can protect yourself from these scams.
1. Common Types of UPI Payment Scams
a) Fake Payment Notifications
Scammers send you fake SMS or screenshots showing “payment successful” when no money is actually transferred.
b) QR Code Scams
They ask you to scan a QR code to “receive” money, but scanning it actually authorizes a payment from your account.
c) Phishing Links
Fraudsters send links via SMS, email, or WhatsApp, claiming to be from a bank, which lead to fake UPI login pages to steal your credentials.
d) Remote Access Apps
They trick you into installing screen-sharing apps like AnyDesk or QuickSupport, giving them access to your phone and banking apps.
e) Job & Lottery Scams
They claim you’ve won money or a job incentive and ask for a “processing fee” through UPI.
2. Safety Tips to Avoid UPI Scams
✅ Never share your UPI PIN with anyone – even bank officials will never ask for it.
✅ Do not scan unknown QR codes – you only need to scan QR codes when you’re making a payment, not receiving it.
✅ Verify payment receipts on your UPI app, not via SMS or screenshots.
✅ Avoid clicking suspicious links – always open bank apps directly instead of from messages.
✅ Enable transaction alerts via SMS and email to track every payment.
✅ Set a daily transaction limit in your UPI app to minimize loss if hacked.
✅ Use official UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or your bank’s official app – avoid third-party clones.
✅ Update your app and phone software regularly for security patches.
3. What to Do If You’re a Victim
-
Block your UPI account via your bank’s helpline immediately.
-
Call the National Cybercrime Helpline 1930 as soon as possible.
-
File a complaint at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
-
Inform your bank in writing and request to freeze the fraudulent transaction.
-
Keep all evidence – screenshots, messages, transaction IDs.
4. Quick Checklist Before Any UPI Transaction
-
Is the person/company verified? ✅
-
Are you sending money to the correct account? ✅
-
Is the QR code scanned from a trusted source? ✅
-
Did you double-check the payment amount? ✅
-
Did you avoid clicking unknown links? ✅
UPI scams are growing smarter every year. Awareness and quick action are the best defenses against them. Remember – to receive money via UPI, you never have to enter your PIN or scan a QR code. Always verify before you pay, and never let urgency cloud your judgment.
